The Hidden Epidemic - Understanding the Deficiency of Vitamin D in the Punjabi Community

My name is Palki Mand and I’m a first year student at UC Berkeley studying Chemistry. The following blog post will discuss the importance and effects of vitamin D in our Punjabi community.

Why Vitamin C is Important

Vitamin D is crucial to one’s immune system function, bone health, and their overall health. However, many in our Punjabi community today suffer from vitamin D deficiency and have no idea. This is quite dangerous as it can lead to several health issues including weakness in muscle and fatigue - and possibly a greater risk of chronic diseases. Not only does vitamin D allow the body to absorb calcium and strengthen one's bones, but it reduces inflammation and supports significant immune health. If a person does not receive enough Vitamin D, they are more likely to develop health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and depression.

Why/How Punjabis typically have lower levels of Vitamin D

Many of our Punjabis who live in the colder areas are likely to be vitamin D deficient, as their exposure to the sun is quite limited. For our elders who wear cultural suits and kurtas that cover most of their skin, it is likely they have lower vitamin D levels. Moreover, our diet habits also are unlikely to include enough vitamin D since this vitamin is usually found in egg yolks and fish, fortified foods. Several Studies have shown that South Asians, specifically from the North area are likely to experience chronic diseases like diabetes and heart diseases, causing them to have lower levels of vitamin D.

Prevention & Tips

On the bright side, Vitamin D deficiency is relatively simple to prevent through a change in diet, a greater exposure to the sun, and a little supplementation. Increasing possible diet in foods like yogurt, fatty fish, and milk are wonderful sources of vitamin D. For those who possibly are not in areas where they can get direct sun exposure or their diet is possibly vegetarian, supplements can assist to maintain their vitamin D levels. Therefore, by making simple lifestyle changes and raising awareness, we can protect long term complications and improve our overall health.
