Significance of Establishing Healthy Sleep Patterns
Hello everyone! I'm Navneet Kaur, currently pursuing my undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley with an intended major in Molecular and Cell Biology. I'm also currently an intern for the BPSHI clinic committee. A topic that I wanted to bring awareness to is the importance of having good sleeping habits. In the Punjabi/Sikh community, there is a notable lack of emphasis placed on the significance of adequate sleep. Individuals in professions such as truck driving, agriculture, or household management, where the workload often exceeds reasonable limits, may inadvertently overlook the importance of prioritizing adequate sleep and its consequential impact on daily functioning. It is crucial to acknowledge that neglecting proper sleep patterns can significantly compromise one's health and well-being.
Some methods to improve sleeping habits can include:
Keeping a regular sleep schedule, going to bed and waking up at the same time every day.
Relaxing before bed with calming activities such as reading, listening to path (kirtan sohila), or even meditation.
Making sure your bedroom is comfortable for sleep by keeping it dark, quiet, and cool.
Trying to avoid screens such as phones, television, etc..
Staying active during the day to promote better sleep, but trying not to do intense exercise too close to bedtime.
Limiting caffeine intake, especially in the afternoon and evening, as it can interfere with falling asleep.
Simple adjustments like these have the potential to significantly enhance the quality of our sleep and contribute to our overall well-being. In our community, where work and family can feel overwhelming, focusing on our sleep can boost productivity and reduce stress. Implementing these methods and techniques can enhance energy levels and contribute to individuals' overall well-being!
